Rinjani For Earth Day
On Sunday 24th April, 2011, five Bali International School students climbed Indonesia’s second highest volcano, Mount Rinjani, in Lombok, for International Earth Day. Representing the Make A Change Bali organization, the group consisted of Pudji Skibenes, Marcus Smyth, Victor Greenwood, Sam and Gary Bencheghib. Their aim is to spread awareness of the natural disasters that have impacted Indonesia over the past year. Working alongside the Quake Relief GCP Group, they have been raising funds for the victims of the Gunung Merapi eruption and the Padang earthquake.
The group trekked for over 25 hours through muddy tropical forest and along steep rocky ridges, striving to push on despite strong gusts of wind and monsoon rain. Once at the summit, the first rays of morning sun appeared over the horizon and the group was treated to a breathtaking view of Sumbawa, Bali, Lombok and Rinjani’s lake below. In awe of the majestic view from their vantage point, the group’s long journey all felt worthwhile.
